Robert Franks has taught at Central College since 1988. He is a tenured professor of computer science. He was the eighth recipient of the Kenneth J. Weller Distinguished Professorship of the Liberal Arts. He served as interim vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college from March 2009-June 2011.
Franks was the project director for two congressional directed appropriations of $1.8 million and he was the primary investigator for a National Science Foundation CSEMS grant for over $300,000. Franks is a past recipient of the Hutch Bearce Community Building and Faculty Leadership Award.
