This presentation offers an examination of WWI, with special emphasis placed on the new
and modern aspects of the fighting. It concludes by looking at the ways in which participants
commemorated their sacrifices in the war, including poems, poppies, monuments, and music.
Mark Barloon has been teaching history at Central College for seventeen years. He was born in
Iowa, studied at both Iowa State University (B.A., 1988) and the University of Iowa (M.A., 1990),
and received his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in 2001. His area of expertise is American
Military History, with special emphasis on the American Civil War.
