Saipan: D-Day in the Pacific

Central RED brings back Mark Barloon for a discussion on Saipan: D-Day in the Pacific at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18, Boat Moore Weller Rooms, Maytag Student Center. The presentation will share the impact nine days after the Allied landings in the Normandy region of France and how U.S. marines stormed the beaches of Saipan to gain a crucial air base to launch a new long-range B-29 bombers directly at Japan’s home islands.
Mark Barloon was born in northeast Iowa and raised on a family-owned hog farm. After high school, he attended Iowa State University (B.A., History), the University of Iowa (M.A., History), and the University of North Texas (Ph.D., History). Barloon spent several years working as an intelligence officer. He returned to Iowa and has been teaching at Central College for over 20 years.
