I Remember the First Stroke

ENGL 216: LGBTQ+ Literature and Culture
For the final course project, students were invited to produce a creative response to or interpretation of one of our course texts that demonstrated both careful engagement with the original literary text and creative thinking and skill. Colbe chose to create a multimedia response to Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray in the voice of Dorian’s portrait just before the final climactic moment at the novel’s end. This brilliant response combines creative writing, performance, and visual art as the portrait confronts Dorian for his wrongs while slowly morphing into the monstrous creature Dorian has become. It is a haunting and thought-provoking performance piece that captures the social and psychological depth of Wilde’s novel.
